I had driven through New Norcia a few weeks earlier on my way to Dongara, but did not have time to stay or go on the tour of this amazing monastic town, so as I was going back to Perth for a few days chose to go a day earlier and stay at the New Norcia Guest House.
It is an amazing place to stay, and the Guest House deal is fantastic. $80 gets you a room (with ensuite) for the night, and three meals. I arrived late in the morning and went to the dining room for lunch. It is a small dining room, with one table set for four people - one being a staff member, and a couple from France, whose three daughters migrated to Australia some years ago, and settled in Perth. They visit annually to see the girls and their now growing families, and take the time to explore Australia. The couple were very friendly, and the husband spoke good English, but had to translate for his wife who did not.
The first meal was amazing - especially considering the price - home made tomato and herb soup, grumbled chicken breast and salad, with fruit and icecream for dessert. On the table were bottles of water, juice and wine (Berri Estates Rose).
I went on the tour in the afternoon, which was wonderful and I took many photos with my Canon.
For the evening meal, there was more tomato soup, pasta salad and more fruit and icecream. Fresh figs were on the menu, which was great, and earlier I had seen the fig orchard at the back of the monastery - trees laden with figs.
I sat for a while with the lady who works at New Norcia, but a strange man, who should not have been at the Guest House was prowling around, so we made a hasty getaway to our rooms!
In the morning I was up early and went for a walk, had breakfast, and went for another walk down to the river, and across to the BeeHouse (no bees there any more, but a delightful walk) and visited the cemetery.
I left New Norcia about 10 am, and drove on south to Perth, taking photos along the way, and stopping at Bindoon for coffee where I found a very interesting article about a bamboo plantation at Gingin. I tried to make contact with the bloke in the article hoping I could see him on my return a day or two later, but so far he has not responded to my message.
Sadly all my photos have mysteriously disappeared from my camera, though I am hopeful they can be resurrected. Meanwhile, I am considering returning to Perth via New Norcia to take replacement photos.
